Elysium Review, October 28 2016 – Halloween

Halloween’s a theme to inspire many a dark dream, and Elysium Cabaret brought this macabre holiday’s phantasms to life this past Friday! Goofy spooks and grim spectacles alike took the stage to delight and startle the audience with choreographed tricks and treats. As the garou growl of Gunner von Phoenix conducted one act after another through the night and down the playlist, hosts Jilley and Paul Woodrunner gave the crowd a warm Halloween welcome and kept spirits shining like a Jack O Lantern. It was an evening of crowd-pleasing references and thrilling originality, perfect for this tradition that celebrates ceremony and creativity!

Act One: Corri with FT – Spooky Scary Skeletons Remix – The Living Tombstone

Amidst a mist of green, Corri and FT conducted a retinue of spooky scary skeletons in a dance straight from a vintage cartoon! It was a light-hearted take on this dark holiday, with fluttering bats and a quirky tune. Dressed like a soft shoe crew, these fleshless dancers kicked up their bony heels and boosted the humor of the crowd!

Act Two: Ally Romani and Michael Romani – Nothing to Fear – Chris Rea

The next act featured a sensuous tale spun of sand storms, black silks and the brilliant minds of Ally and Michael Romani. Telling a tale of an erotic dancer encountering a black-cloaked saracen, then adopting the mantle of an assassin and battling with blades and romance, this story was set in a billowing desert. A story was woven with text while the pair of dancers brought it to marvelous life with graceful motion and flawless costume changes.

Act Three: Jilley with Mona and Jo – Evil Circus Clown Music

Jilley smashed the audience in the face with a gruesome spectacle, following the Romani romance with a full-bore frightfest – an homage to Killer Clowns from Outer Space! As spot-on replicas of the grotesque clowns cavorted in a stunning stage set that blended a cannibalistic butcher shop with a carnival, blood rained from above and eyeballs throbbed on the backdrop! It was an amazing construction in every sense, that surely succeeded wracking many a brain and turning many a stomach.

Act Four: Babypea – Every Day is Halloween – Ministry

The crowd next took a plunge into Babypea’s laboratory – a place of mystical parchement posters, bizarre anatomical studies and strange machines. Babypea herself cavorted like a cross between a female Frankenstein and a patchwork monster, as subjects suffered in cases and beakers behind her. This stutterstep routine was frentic as the lightning that arced about the stage, presenting a truly eletric spectacle of the mind of mad woman – and Babypea’s visionary talent!

Act Five: Goddess Shayna and Rory – Vermillion, Part 1 – Slipknot

Goddess Shayna and Rory took the audience on a macabre tour – using camera-conducting technology to guide the crowd on a tale of broken hearts and turned earth. First, in a graveyard, a lover mourned by a tomb, only to have the ghost rise and dance with him. Their dance turned morbid as the lover himself transformed into a phantom, and the entwined pair floated into a spectral realm to spend an eternity together. This ethereal ode to the undying power of love was a perfect marriage of the eerie and the affectionate.

Act Six: Misha, Ame, Eva, Si and Sorcha – What’s This – Danny Elfman

Misha’s act reminded the crowd that even nightmares can be fun – especially if they come before Christmas! In this ice-skating homage to Tim Burton’s classic film, a group of skull-faced phantoms danced on a shifting set that transformed from Jack Skellington’s Halloween haunt to Christmas Town! With whirling movements and ecstatic steps, this high-energy number conveyed the joy of discovering new things – especially a different take on the holidays.

Act Seven: Kyshra – Nymphetamine Fix – Cradle of Filth

Kyshra swooped onto the stage erotic display of fallen angels and phantasmal figures. Set against the grim splendor of a tomb, her angelic figure spun and floated on the stage, only to steadily transform into a gray-skinned, de-fleshed and decadently dressed figure. As the dance became more carnal, the figure exalted in her sinister sensuality, showing that necromancy and corruption are not without their sexy side.

Act Eight: Ame – Even in Death – Evanescence

Ame’s dark figure of lady death dancing amid the tombstones climaxed the night with a dance that was both morbid and sensuous. In front of a monolithic tomb lit by red candles, a black-skinned feminine figure spun in raven feathers amid the tombstones. Her dance once again displayed the message of how romance endures even this mortal coil and sensuality survives even in a graveyard.

Act Nine: Crowd Dance by Eva (Captain) – Feed My Frankenstein; Bloody Mary; Cry Little Sister

The crowd dance was a true show-stopper! Before a set dressed like a creepy asylum or crumbling factory, Eva’s haunted host of skeletons served as the crowd’s positions. Surrounded by these fleshless figures, the audience danced through a blend of tunes that struck many tones, showing the diversity and downright fun of this imaginative holiday!
Elysium Cabaret never lacks in imagination, and Halloween was one of its most splendid showcases: With crazed laboratories, kooky ghouls and killer clowns, it featured all the facets of Halloween – from the horrific to the hilarious. Thrills and chills are never in short supply at The Empire Room, and we hope to see you this holiday season, for many special themed shows ahead!
